Is it as common to see Linux distro's on Apple machines as it is on x86s? That would seem the way to go.

You do see it but not that often. I think this is because far less people own Macs. I dont know the numbers but I think you would find roughly the same ratio of people using Linux on Macs as you see Linux on a PC. Yellowdog Linux is very popular amongst Mac users and I know that most of the major distro's have ports. And you are right, it is a fine relationship between software and hardware.
